Question #: 15444

Question: [Round Female 4 pin 17mm Threaded Spindle Connector] will this fit a 2.2 kw spindle

Current Solution

Yes, this spindle connector will fit a 2.2kW spindle but there are a few varieties of connectors on 2.2kW spindles. confirm with the images that this is the correct connector. The connector varieties are different enough that the picture should provide a good indication of the correct connector.

  • HOW TO CONTROL MY 2.2 KW SPINDLE VIA MACH3

You can go to our instructions on for the breakout board here: http://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-parallel-breakout-relay to get the information on turning the spindle on and off from the computer and mach3. Alternatively, you can connect the computer using RS485 serial to the inverter and send control commands that way.

  • Can the 2.2 KW water cooled spindle be fitted with a 1/2" chuck/collet ?

Absolutely. You can have 1/2" collets used in 2.2kW spindles.

  • Will your 2.5 KW spindle work with my Hitachi WJ200-022SF VFD and does it have a thermal couple temp output?

From reading on the Hitachi WJ200-022SF VFD, it seems as it will work just fine with this VFD. However since we have not tried this cross match, I would carefully take each connection and setting into great consideration and detail on both the Hitachi recommendations for setup, as well as our spindles recommended setup.
Our spindles do not have a thermal couple temperature output.

  • I bought a 2.2 Kw spindle and YL620 A-2 from you and am getting an ER 4 message. How do I fix it?

If the VFD is presenting an ER 4 error, the VFD is most likely damaged. The VFD will either need to be serviced or you will need to purchase another VFD. The latter is probably the less expensive option, unfortunately.

  • [801] Is this enough rating for a Nema 34 motor with max 6 amps? Also what about a 220V 2200Watt Spindle?

For the NEMA 34 stepper motor with a maximum current of 6 amps, 18 AWG wire would technically be sufficient. According to the American Wire Gauge (AWG) standard, 18 AWG wire can handle up to around 10 amps of current in chassis wiring and around 16 amps in power transmission. If you are considering running a very long length of cable from the driver to the stepper motor, you may want to consider using 16 AWG.

As for the spindle, this wire gauge is well-suited. There are three phase shifts, each at 120 degrees and each conductor is carrying only 1/3 of the power. At 220v, 2200 watts / 220 V = 10 amps. 1/3 of 10 amps is 3.333 amps, so each conductor will be have a load of 3.33 amps.

  • Can you control the spped of the 2.2 KW spindle using the breakout board and Mach3 soft ware?

Yes, you can control the speed of the 2.2 kW spindle, and the other spindles we sell, through Mach3 software. It requires making some changes to the settings in Mach3 and in your inverter. It also requires an additional part, which is called a USB to Serial Converter, found on our site here:

    https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/Interfaces-newbiehack-Interfaces-TTL232R-USB-UART-Serial

I have some additional instructions, that I will send upon request, by email. I will also be adding a complete tutorial and video, to the website, on how to do this soon.

  • 1.5KW water hose 1/4" ID - 3/8" OD does not fit in spindle fitting with ID 0.31"

If you are using a silicone tube with a 1/4” ID, it will fit the nipple of the 1.5kW spindle water connections measuring an OD of 0.31”. The silicone will stretch and you will need to use water or saliva to help the tube fit.

The tube ID being smaller than the nipple will help the seal prevent water from leaking.
