Question: I have a GMT 2.2kw water cooled spindle that sounds like the bearings are going out and want to know if your spindle (https://buildyourcnc.com/Item/spindle-inverter-2!2kw-spindle-novfd) is comparable for a swap. The drive is a Delta VFD-M 220v.

Current Solution

Our spindle should work fine with your Delta VFD-M 220v. Spindles that match a VFD are specific to the coil windings. The bearings, shaft and other mechanical components that make up the spindle may be different, but that should not matter.

    You will need PlanetCNC software for the USB breakout board and when plugging in the USB the computer should automatically recognize the board, however you can go into device manager to see if the USB terminal is working correctly.
    The parallel breakout board; the USB is not a connection terminal rather than a power source, and the parallel port will be the communication terminal.
    The items you will need for a water cooled spindle would be: water pump, silicon tubing(length desired by customer), a extension cord(from a hardware store(orange))(1 same gauge wire/length as extension cord).

  • I am looking at purchasing your 2.2 kw water cooled spindle. I'm assuming it comes with the VFD. I have a rotary phase converter in my shop. Are these spindles 3 phase? And if so, can I bypass use of the VFD and control the spindle speed by the CAM software instead? Or is the VFD an absolute necessity to use on the spindle?

    Did you get a manual for your VFD? Where did you purchase the VFD and spindle?

    I bought the VFD through Amazon with a similar spindle that you sell. The VFD came with a manual but unfortunately the spindle had all the model number and specs scratched off of it. In an attempt to set it up, I fried the spindle. I have complained to the vendor and to Amazon but have received no solution. If your spindle arrives with proper documentation I probably can set it up myself.

    Yes. The VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) has a large set of parameters that can be modified. This is typically called "programming" the VFD. The parameters can be accessed using the front control panel of the VFD.

    Since the VFD is the mechanism that control the allowable current draw from the spindle, there is a parameter that assigns the motor rated current; however, it is probably better to match the rated current of the motor and "up" the circuit breaker current instead. If the current limit is set too low, then there is a possibility that the spindle will cause a current overload error on the VFD and cause the spindle to stop.

  • Good morning, I would like to know if the strength of the 2.2kw spindle is weaker when using the 110V version of the VFD. Does it have the same power as the 220V version VFD?

    The 2.2kW spindle will have the same amount of torque and strength using either the 110V or the 220V inverter. Nothing will significantly change in either application since the 110V inverter has a small step up transformer which will increase the voltage from 110V to 220V to run the spindle efficiently.

    You will need to look for the parameter that controls the run frequency. The frequency can be controlled bu the panel, external terminals, or the RS485 TX/RX terminals (UART protocol). You will want to change that parameter so it uses the panel. If you are referring to the maximum panel dial frequency is only allowing 200-300 rpm, then look for the parameters to control the frequency.

    For 200 RPM:
    Hz = 200/60 = 3.33 Hz

    For 300 RPM:
    Hz = 300/60 = 5 Hz

    Conversion to RPM:
    If you ever find yourself yearning to reverse-engineer the process, the formula is as follows:

    RPM = Hz × 60

    Look for values that match somewhere between 3 and 5 in your frequency parameters and replace them with 400 to give you 24,000 RPM max.

  • I have wired up my 110v VFD and my 2.2Kw spindle and I get an E.Lu.5 code. My wiring is correct and the parameters are set to those for the VFD according to your website I found in a previously answered question from someone here. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

    The E.Lu.5 Error code on your VFD is related to Low Voltage.

    The recommended action is:
    - 1. Check whether the input voltage is normal. (the voltage from the wall/breaker to the VFD)
    - 2. Check whether there is a sudden change in load.
    - 3. Check whether there is any phase missing.

    Unfortunately, these three recommended actions will probable require an electrician to test the line going into the VFD.

However, our spindles have a runout of less than .0001 in, which includes the collets that we sell. If you use a collet from another manufacturer, we cannot guarantee this TIR (Total Indicated Runout) dimension.

  • I've buffered a PWM signal to a 0-10V analog signal and I would like to use that signal to run your 110V 2.2kW spindle and VFD. Could you please detail the correct wiring and VFD settings to get that working?

    This will depend on the VFD you have to identify the correct terminal. The terminal on the VFD will be labeled AI1 typically (Analog Input #1). You will also need to make sure to complete the PWM circuit using the GND terminal on the VFD.

  • I wpold like to know how to hook up my water pump (12vdc 9 amp) to turn it on and off using Mach 3. I have your Blue Brew break-out board Rev. 2.8 dated 8-12. Explain how the three relay connections work for this application? Thanks.

    Since the pump will use a standard 12v power supply, you will have two wires. One of those wires will be connected from the power supply to the pump. The other wire will be connected to the power supply and the pump, but cut that wire and connect one side of it in the P terminal and the other end in the S or the O terminal depending on if you need the connection as NO (Normally Open) or NC (Normally Closed).

    Currently we do not have that modification kit, our set up is fixed for our greenBull only modification kit we have for this model is the long z-axis kit(Designed for Foam cutting).

    Yes, the 651 oz/in motor requires a driver that is compatible to the motors (the motor will draw 6 amps max and the driver paired with this motor will be able to allow for a 6 amp draw). I would also recommend a 36 volt power supply for better high velocity performance.

  • I would like to know what the lowest rpm that can be acheived with the 2.2kw spindle and inverter and still have enough torque to drill

    According to the supplier of the 2.2 kW spindle, the safest operating speed for the spindle is 6000 RPM. The supplier also stated that theoretically, the spindle can operate from 0 to 24,000 RPM. I am continuing a dialog with the supplier to delve deeper into understanding the configurations and ramifications of such configurations for operations outside of the safe boundaries into the "theoretical" ranges.

  • I was wondering what you recommend to use to cool your spindle when continuously exposed to freezing temperature. Can I use winter windshield cleaner (cheap) or do I have to use antifreeze engine coolant or something else? water just sounds like a really bad idea. I live in Canada Eh!

    Using Anti-Freeze in the cooling system with either our spindle or our laser tubes will not have any problems and we recommend using a small amount in locations where temperature is freezing or below.
    Although we do not recommend using an entire gallon of anti-freeze rather just a small quantity with tap water will be sufficient.

    All last winter, the temperature was below freezing and sometimes below zero. I used 100% antifreeze for the spindle coolant. Worked great !! All the spindle needs is any type of coolant flowing through it to take the heat away. I use three gallons of antifreeze in a tub with a fish-tank pump to push the antifreeze through. 100% antifreeze works great in cold or hot winter.
