Question #: 14892

Question: [1.5 kW (kilowatt) Water Cooled Spindle with Inverter (VFD)] what power plug is used on the 220volt vfd?

Current Solution

You can use any 220 style plug on the 220 VFD. Make sure to use a plug that is for a single phase 220 AC.

Respond:

Other Possible Solutions to this Question

  • what is the current draw of the 220v VFD

The current draw of the 220V VFD is 10 amps. Since the spindle is rated at 2.2kW, and the mains for the US 220V is in the range of 220V to 240V,

    2200W/220V = 10A
    2200W/240V = 9.167A

So, the rage of current draw will be between 10A and 9A, but it is advisable to provide a buffer of about 5 more amps if possible.

  • What brand is the 2.2 kW spindle? Same for the VFD. Thanks.

Spindles are generally covered up to 1 year after date of purchase. We do not repair them in house, but we do work with our manufacturer to replace defective units. Generally if you have a defective unit covered under warranty, we will issue a replacement.

  • WHAT SOFTWARE CAN BE USED WITH THE BLACKTOOTH LASER CUTTER?

If you take the standard parallel cable BoB (Break Out Board), then you will need control software (Mach 3 or EMC2) and CAM software to make your G-Code (such as CamBam). Personally I use CamBam and Mach 3, they work beautifully but don't expect to turn them on and know how they work out of the box. Give yourself a few weeks to get familiar with the basics. CamBam is VERY powerful software for it's price. I'm surprised how much I keep learning on what I can do with it...I highly recommend it if you want as much control as possible.

Mach 3 + CamBam as a bundle costs $310. EMC2 will give you a free replacement for Mach 3 and is exclusively for Linux.

If you use the USB BoB, it will cost an extra $75 + $75 for the software. This is an all-in-one package so no need for Mach 3 or CamBam.

For etching rasters (jpeg, bmp, tiff, non-vectors, photos), I highly recommend PicEngrave. It has been a labor of love for the past 9 years and John has done a wonderful job with it. It easily compares in quality compared to software that is in the $200-$300 range. John's software runs $40 and can be found here: http://picengrave.com/ (don't let the modest website fool you, this stuff can do amazing things). DotG and the Mach3 engrave plugin are two other options and instructions can be found on Dustans page in the gallery on buildyourcnc.com website.

The recommended total length of motor cable should be 15 feet for the blueChick v4.2

    Z - 6 feet
    Y - 5 feet

  • What are the physical dimensions of the 2.2kw VFD?

On Monday, when I get back into the office, I will provide the dimensions for the 2.2kW spindle and I will also provide a drawing of these dimensions on the spindle 2.2kW page. Thanks.

    Additional Information:
    Spindle dimensional specifications:

    - Overall diameter is 80mm
    - The length of the outer housing is 200 mm
    - Diameter of the extension just below the spindle is 36mm and the length is 12mm
    - The Collet shaft diameter is 11.318 and the collet nut diameter is 16.75mm and both extend from the extension approximately 52.5 mm
    - The overall length is 264.5mm not including the air ports and the electrical connector (outer housing 200mm + extension 12mm + collet shaft and nut 52.5 mm).
    - The air ports extend 20 mm from the top of the spindle

  • DOES THE SPINDLE RUN ON A 50HZ POWER SOURCE?

The spindle inverter (VFD) will run on a 220V (or between 170V-250V) power source with either 50Hz or 60Hz.

  • what size circuit breaker should I use with the 2.2KW VFD?

The 2.2kW spindle has a power rating of 2.2kW or 2200 watts.

If the VFD AC voltage input is rated for 220 volts, then 2200 watts / 220 volts is 10 amps, so a 15 or 20 amp breaker will work.

If the VFD AC voltage input is rated for 110 volts, then 2200 watts / 110 volts is 20 amps, so a 25 or 30 amp breaker will work.

  • What size of wire do you use to connect the VFD to the spindle?

The type of wire that should be used between the spindle and the VFD (Variable Frequency Driver also called the inverter) should be of stranded type and we use between 18 and 16 AWG.

The total current is divided among the three coil wires, therefor a wire gauge of 16 should be sufficient.

Currently we use 20AWG 4 conductor.

    Summary - Mach3 versus Mach4 :
Mach4 Hobby is the closest comparable version to Mach3, yet it is still much more advanced. The price point of these versions is nearly
identical. Mach3 is very popular for hobby enthusiest and is used in highly modified form by some great OEM's. In general, Mach4 is more
complex than Mach3 and follows cnc industry standards. Mach3 has many customizations to make it easier for hobby users, but can lead to
difficulties if users plan to apply their knowledge to more advanced systems. Mach4 is built as a full featured cnc controller capable of high
speed machining for servo and stepper systems. Mach3's feature set is complete, while Mach4's will continue to expand. If you are new to cnc,
Artsoft highly recommends using and learning Mach4 even if it appears that Mach3's feature set will be adequate for your needs.
