    Absolutely. These spindles do not get bogged down under load like routers will. The speed is regulated and current will adjust with the load.

And if so, can I bypass use of the VFD and control the spindle speed by the CAM software instead? Or is the VFD an absolute necessity to use on the spindle?

  • I just purchased the 2.2 kW water cooled spindle. I also ordered a 1/8" collet to go with it, since I assume it comes with a 1/4" collet. Is this correct?

    Spindle comes with 1/4" collet.

    "All of our spindles come standard with a 1/4" collet. The 2.2kw, and 4.0kw, can be upgraded to a 1/2" collet with a separate purchase"

    And a bucket to hold the water.

    You may also consider CPU cooling systems which can actually be fastened to the back of the gantry. We do this for the Fabricator Pro machine. The CPU cooling I would recommend is a small pump and cylinder with a heat sink, or a small radiator.

    A break in process, I'm guessing means if the spindle needs to be turned off for some reason? If so, then no. The water cooled spindle can be run constantly. We run our spindle for very long periods of time.

    The VFD does come with a manual that details the wiring and connection specifications, terminal features and a list of the parameters. There is no information on how to connect it to Mach3. It does detail the specifications within the parameters and terminal features on the analog input that is used with Mach3 and other control programs.

    You can use a compressor to unclogg the water lines of the spindle. We use this method and it works every time (so far).

    To rush/clean the water from the spindle, you will need a air compressor or air tank that you will use with a blow gun, which you will rush air through one end cleaning the water from within the spindle.

    There is no specific manner in connecting the water lines to the spindle. No specific output and input locations, only the diameter which we use is 1/4 Inside Diameter and 3/8 Outside Diameter (you might find another one that works just as well).
    Unscrew the 2 hose nuts and feed the tube through (will be snug), and adjust the tube on the hose fittings and screw the hose nuts down. Feed the tubes through your machine towards the water bucket, making sure it will not get caught on any moving parts and cause a jam/leak, and fit one tube to the outlet of your water pump and leave the other tube to the bucket as a return line. (unless you are using a cooler like a radiator, then feed it to the outlet of the radiator and to your water pump)

  • My pokeysCNC board creates and analog signal of 0-10V for 0 to 24000 spindle rpm just like it should from Mach3. However, when the spindle is on, the voltage only gets to about 3.8V for 24000 rpm. It seems like the vfd is drawing more current than the pokeyscnc analog output can produce. It there an easy solution to this problem?

    Do you have the Pokeys57CNC connected to a 24V external power supply?

    Yes, a 24V external power supply with the jumper positioned. I'm using the ethernet port so the 24v is the only source of power. I plan to measure the amp draw when I have a chance to see how much the vfd is drawing on the analog out.

    Further information. The resistance across the terminals on the vfd is 22k ohms. With an independent 0-10v current source I can run the spindle from 20 to 400 Hz. The PokeysCNC only gets to 3.8v with the vfd attached (and the vfd is at 150 Hz) compared to 10v when the vfd is not attached. The power to the PokeysCNC is steady at 24.18 V, so I'm not maxing out the power supply. Still looking for thoughts on what might be going on?

    And the other thing - The measured amperage is 0.17 mA for the 0-10 V signal (which makes perfect sense for 3.7 V and 22k Ohms).

    Just to bring finality to this issue - I added a 2.2 microfarad capacitor across the 0-10V input terminal (from signal to ground). This solved the issue. Evidently, it was an electrical noise issue.

  • Hello what is the thread size of the water cooling fittings on the 2.2kw spindle? I am wondering if I can replace the fittings with standard pc liquid cooling fittings, which are G1/4".

    They do have a similar looking thread as the G1/4”, but I will confirm in the morning. We use the G1/4” on the pump and radiator so it will be easy to determine this fit when I get into the office.

    You will need to look for the parameter that controls the run frequency. The frequency can be controlled bu the panel, external terminals, or the RS485 TX/RX terminals (UART protocol). You will want to change that parameter so it uses the panel. If you are referring to the maximum panel dial frequency is only allowing 200-300 rpm, then look for the parameters to control the frequency.

    For 200 RPM:
    Hz = 200/60 = 3.33 Hz

    For 300 RPM:
    Hz = 300/60 = 5 Hz

    Conversion to RPM:
    If you ever find yourself yearning to reverse-engineer the process, the formula is as follows:

    RPM = Hz × 60

    Look for values that match somewhere between 3 and 5 in your frequency parameters and replace them with 400 to give you 24,000 RPM max.
