Question: What is the difference between the 3 Blacktooth laser packages offered? Specifically, one with/without a computer? Why do I need one? Also, is the $2100 assembled vs the $1700 which is not? What am I paying $400 more for?

If you read the description the first uses a parallel interface for computer hookup. The second uses USB interface for computer hookup. The third utilizes an integrated computer which is built into the package thus you do not need an external computer.

    The Honeywell brand goggles meet ANSI certification Z136.1, relating to the safe use of lasers, and are calibrated to optimally block the specific wavelengths of light produced by CO2 lasers (the details are available in the website description here: https://buildyourcnc.com/item/laser-components-goggles-safety-honeywell.) The generic tinted goggles also block the specific CO2 laser wavelengths, but a good deal of other wavelengths as well. That and frame style variation is the basic difference.

  • I have the USB controller board and the 8825 step driver. I need a wiring diagram between the two. Specifically, what does the GND pin on the X-axis connect to? Also, what does the 5V pin on the driver connect to?

    If you want speed control, it is recommended to use the RS-485 connection on the VFD and use the control program such as Mach3 to communication serially with the VFD using this RS-485 connection.

    If you would rather use a controller such as the PMDX-107 to simulate the effect of a potentiometer using the Aref, Aout and Agnd and the Rev/Dir and Fwd/Run terminals to control operation and direction, you can connect those to the VFD.

    PMDX-107 Aout connects to the VI (analog voltage in). This is like the wiper on a potentiometer.
    PMDX-107 Agnd connects to the ACM terminal on the VFD for Analog common.
    PMDX-107 COM connects to DCM terminal on the VFD for Digital common.
    PMDX-107 Fwd/Run connects to the FOR terminal on the VFD for Forward.
    PMDX-107 Rev/Dir connects to the REV terminal on the VFD for Reverse.

    Refer to your PMDX-107 manual to correctly configure your dip switch settings and make sure to calibrate (tweak) the speed control using the trimmer next to the terminals on the PMDX-107.

    The CP terminal is wired to the step terminal on the 8825 step driver.
    The CW terminal is wired to the direction terminal on the 8825 step driver.
    The GND terminal connects to the GND on the 8825 step driver

    The 5V connector on the driver simply powers the logic side of the chip and needs to connect to VCC pin on the keyboard jog.

  • I am building the Blacktooth with integrated computer, which consists of a motherboard and hard drive. Does the hard drive need to be formatted or any form of OS loaded onto the integrated computer?

    For the integrated computer for the blackTooth, the hard drive doe not need to be formatted, but will require an OS (operating system) to be installed. Ubuntu Linux can be installed with the CNC integrated software from Linuxcnc.org. Windows can also be installed.

    The blackTooth uses CNC software for its control. You will need either LinuxCNC (free) or Mach3 to control the blackTooth. There are various methods to use this control, such as using a .dxf (can be created from SketchUp) and a CAM software like CamBam. The CAM software will be used to provide machining operations, like profiling for the polygons and lines. Use a tool diameter of near 0.

    The z-axis direction controls the laser on and off, so make sure that your material thickness is very thin (like .001") so there is no time delay for the laser turning on.

    If you want to engrave photos, Mach3 has a plug-in for this purpose.

  • I have been using a Blacktooth for some time, with Vectric2d and Mach3. I have always found that the laser burns a hole before moving off. I have always set material thickness at actual value. Should it be set very low? Also, of the many post processors supplied with 2d, which is best for Blacktooth?

    If you have the laser firing using the Z direction, then you want to make sure that the thickness and clearance plane is extremely small. The time it takes for the software to think that the z axis has lowered to the depth set in the design is causing the laser to stay on in a single position for too long. Make sure that the depth is extremely small, like .0001" or the smallest amount allowed by the Vectric software. Also, make sure the clearance plane (the height that the z axis would raise to clear any protrusions like clamps and the such) is extremely low.

  • from what I understand, The BlackTooth Laser comes with an open bottom with no bed, does one pull air through this opening for fume ventilation through the bed?

    On the blackTooth laser cutter and engraver, the ventilation is at the back and there is a slit at the bottom front so when the machine is placed on a surface, the air will move from the front of the machine and out the back through the ventilation. This will move the particles past the mirrors and tube output efficiently with a reduced likelihood of building up on these important surfaces.

  • My Z-axis seems to be reversed on a fully assembled machine... I've tried reversing it in the config settings on Mach 3, but to no avail. What do I need to do? IS this a wiring issue that was not done correctly at the factory?

    If your Z axis is moving in the opposite direction, go into Mach3, click on config, ports & pins, then click on the motor outputs tab. You will see the axes labeled on the left and the parameters labeled on the top of this dialog box. Toggle the dir low active for the z-axis.

  • Is there any precision or accuracy difference between the vertical and blacktooth lasers?

    I will address the two separately (precision and accuracy):

    Precision (repeatability):
    This is most closely related to the resolution. The blackTooth uses the same mechanical drive (timing belts and pulley) of the same ratios and specifications, so the two machines will be the same in this respect.

    Accuracy:

    The output of the machine (the final physical work) matching the input given to the machine (the design data or instructions for the machine to product the physical work. This has to do with both resolution and how well the machine will hold up over time and through environmental changes.

    With that said, both machines have very similar attributes in mechanics and structure. The overall structure is made of MDO (Medium Density Overlay) and has a very low coefficient of linear expansion with regards to temperature change, so accuracy will not be affected in any appreciable manner over time with the two machines. The Vertical Laser XL does use more industry standard rails to hold the heavy gantry, but this will be differ appreciably since the blackTooth will exhibit rigidity by virtue of its size.

    It really is best to consider the application and size as the main aspects of deciding between these two machines.

    With our blackTooth kit, if you were to go with our lowest cost machine being $1700. With the parallel breakout board the best new beginner programs you can use, would be Mach 3 and ArtCAM, since it is a good program for beginning users.

    Now if you feel a little comfortable with CAD/CAM, I would recommend CAMBAM and is a good overall software since it has a large design screen which allows you to view your design more clearly.

  • On the blacktooth machine wiring diagram for parallel breakout a wire goes from 6 on the BOB to TL on the laser power supply. My power supply has an"H" followed by a "L". Which is correct? I've connected to the "L" but the laser appears always on.

    The digital signal portion of the CO2 laser tube power supply has various terminals for signal power, signal gnd, laser intensity and engaging the laser (turning it on or off). The TL and TH are triggers to turn the laser power on or off. These may be labeled L or H on some laser power supplies. You can use either TL/L, or TH/H to control the laser.

    If you use the TL or L terminal to control the laser:
    If a low signal (gnd) is present at that terminal, the laser will turn on. If a high signal (5v) is present, the laser will turn off.

    If you use the TH or H terminal to control the laser:
    If a high signal (5v) is present at that terminal, the laser will turn on. If a low signal (gnd) is present, the laser will turn off.

    You should first test the control signal from the interface with a multimeter to make sure the laser will be controlled correctly before powering the laser power supply

The green leaf stands vertical is it designed for the material to be cut without falling free once it is cut through? And second question: you metioned water running to the spindle is this a cooling system for the spindle?

    You would use holding tabs to keep the parts from falling out of the cut areas. Holding tabs are generated as part of the CAM file. Yes, this is the way the spindle is cooled. This is far superior to air cooling. Air cooling will blow the chips all over the shop.

    On our CNC computer systems, we provided all the hardware required for a fully functional control package. But software items are not included OS systems and Supporting Software are not include, however if windows 7 is ordered we supply the mach 3 demo.

    We do not add the OS system to our systems, due to the options that our customers have either going with(linux, windows).

  • What is the difference between a NEMA 23 and NEMA 24 motor? can I use either one on a machine?

    The frame size difference of the NEMA 23 and 24 is very slight and, depending on the motor mount both will most likely fit. The bigger difference between these stepping motors is the torque. Make sure that the motor that you purchase has the appropriate torque for the axis that it will move.

    Is is safe to go with the higher torque? Or if the torque is too high for what i need is that bad?

    You can use a motor with higher torque. Just make sure to select the correct driver for that motor.

    The frame size has nothing to do with torque. Nema 23 means a 2.3" frame. Nema 24 means a 2.4" frame. That's all. Either could have more or less torque depending on speed and power.

    The frame size difference of the NEMA 23 and 24 is very slight and, depending on the motor mount both will most likely fit. The bigger difference between these stepping motors is the torque. Make sure that the motor that you purchase has the appropriate torque for the axis that it will move.

    Is is safe to go with the higher torque? Or if the torque is too high for what i need is that bad?

    You can use a motor with higher torque. Just make sure to select the correct driver for that motor.

    Additional Information:
    The frame size has nothing to do with torque. Nema 23 means a 2.3" frame. Nema 24 means a 2.4" frame. That's all. Either could have more or less torque depending on speed and power.
